For ten years, only Honda had broken the Ducati' supremacy. After the withdrawal of the Japanese factory, the way to the riders and manufacturers titles appeared very clear. The single official Suzuki GSX-R engaged fought very hard. But the battle versus an Italian bi-cylinders armada, with Neil Hodgson, the new World Champion, at the lead, was too unequal.

World Supersport
By signing with Kawasaki, Fabien Foret, the 2002 World Champion, was convinced to stay on the forefront of the stage. It did not happen so and his sole win at Imola was nothing but a flash in the pan. For his share, Chris Vermeulen perfectly used the great qualities of his Honda CBR-R. In this way, he won the championship and a ticket to Superbike. Stéphane Chambon finished at the second place with the unofficial Vice-champion title. Thierry Van Den Bosch, the Supermoto World Champion 2002, knew a big disillusion and scored only 13 points (4th in Great-Britain).
