Like many of his compatriots, Chris Vermeulen tasted racing very early on dirt track bikes. He made his road racing debut in 1998 and moved to Great-Britain in 2000, on the advice of Barry Sheene. Thanks to his good results, Chris Vermeulen entered the World Supersport series with the Van Zon Honda team in 2002. The season after, he joined the prestigious Dutch squad Ten Kate and clinched the title with four wins. Honda trusted him to race in World Superbikes in 2004. He finished his rookie season in 4th position (double win at Laguna Seca) then runner-up in 2005. Keen to race in MotoGP, he joined the Rizla Suzuki team as Honda proposed him no interesting ride. Despite a bike to improve, he finished 2nd for his home Grand Prix and claimed two poles in 2006. Getting faster and more consistant, he took his first MotoGP win in Le Mans rain in 2007. Since then, although he bears Barry Sheene's lucky 7,Chris Vermeulen records disappointing results aboard his GSV-R.
