Like many of his compatriots, Chris Vermeulen tasted very early racing on dirt track bikes. In 1998, he made his road racing debuts. He moved to Great-Britain in 2000 on the advice of Barry Sheene. Chris Vermeulen quickly recorded good results and entered the World Supersport championship with the Van Zon Honda team in 2002. The season after, he joined the prestigious Dutch squad Ten Kate and retained the title with four wins. Honda trusted him to contest the World Superbike championship in 2004 on the new CBR 1000 RR. He finished his first season in 4th position (double win at Laguna Seca) and claimed the 2nd position in 2005. Desirous to race in MotoGP, he joined the Rizla Suzuki team as Honda proposed him no interesting ride. Despite a bike to improve, he finished 2nd for his home Grand Prix and earnt two poles in 2006. Getting faster and more consistant, he took his first MotoGP win in the rain of Le Mans in 2007. Faithful to Suzuki, Chris Vermeulen rides with Barry Sheene's lucky 7 in 2008.
