Marco Simoncelli started racing with mini-bikes then took part in the Italian and European 125 cc championships. 2002 European champion, he made his world series debut at the end of the season, watched by his friend Valentino Rossi. Between 2003 and 2005, he contended the 125 cc world championship on a Aprilia bike, claiming two wins and finishing in 5th position in 2005. In 2006, Gilera recruited him for his comeback in the 250 cc world championship. After two mixed seasons, Super Sic showed himself unbeatable, despite two DNF in the season start. In 2009, he didn't manage to retain his title, despite six further wins. New comer in the MotoGP class aboard a Gresini's Honda machinery, Marco Simoncelli claimed two top-4 finishes in the late season. With a factory bike, he claimed his two maiden pole positions and achieved his two first top-3 finishes in Czech Republic (3rd) and Australia (2nd). During the Malaysian GP, Marco Simoncelli lost the control of his bike and got hit ; he succumbed to injuries.
