Kenny Roberts Jr was encouraged in motor bike competition by his father, three-times 500 cc World Champion. He began in motocross then on track with 250 cc machines. After participations in the AMA championship and the Ducados Open (2nd in 1993), he made his Grand Prix debut in 1994 (6th at Laguna Seca). Kenny Roberts Jr carried out a good first season in 2005. He moved to the top-class in 1996 within the Yamaha team directed by his father: four top-6 finishes and one front-row qualification. In 1997 and 1998, he took part in the Modenas KR3 adventure initiated by Kenny Roberts Sr. The results were bad and he joined the Suzuki factory team in 1999. He won his first races (4 in 1999 and 2000) and the world title in 2000. Unfortunately, the 2001’ machine wasn’t competitive and the podium in Valencia, the last race of the season, didn’t attenuate his disappointment. The change for 4-stroke engines in 2002 didn’t change anything. Without sponsor, the Japanese factory failed to build a fast machine. In spite of a pole-position in Rio in 2004 and a podium at Donington Park in 2005 (the first for Suzuki since 2001), Kenny Roberts Jr was criticised for his lack of motivation. The new challenge which his father proposed to him made it possible for him to make a new start in 2006 on the KR211V. He finished the championship in 6th position and reached twice the podium.
