Nephew of Angel Nieto (13 times world champion, 90 wins), Fonsi Nieto was born in an environment dedicated to motorcycle racing. He clinched three domestic titles before joining Aspar Martinez's 250 cc world championship team in 2001. He had his best season in 2002 claiming four race wins and finishing runner-up behind Marco Melandri. The 2003 and 2004 campaigns were more difficult. Without any ride in Grand Prix for 2005, he moved to the World Superbike championship aboard a Caracchi Ducati. In spite of disappointing results, Kawasaki recruited him to develop its new machine, alongside Régis Laconi and Chris Walker. In 2007, he claimed a top-3 finish for the final round at Magny-Cours. With Suzuki in 2008, he took the opener round in Qatar and recorded afterwards consistent results. In an economic crisis context, he contended only few rounds with the privateer Athea Ducati. Aboard a Moriwaki, Fonsi Nieto got involved in the new highly close Moto2 championship but got injured at Indianapolis.
