Randy Mamola made in his Grand Prix debuts in 1979, on 250 cc then on 500 cc bikes. He scored the first of his 13 wins in the premier-class from 1980. Although he was never crowned, he had an exceptional career. He contended the world championship and earned victories for the three Japanese manufacturers. He claimed four times the runner-up position : 1980 and 1981 with Suzuki, 1984 with Honda et 1987 with Yamaha. His (relative) lack of success can be explained as much by the level of his competitors (Kenny Roberts, Barry Sheene, Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson) as by his whimsical character, in the paddock and on track. This attitude cost him victories and titles but provided him the unfailing support of the fans. In 1988, he joined the Cagiva squad for three disappointing seasons. After a sabbatical year, Randy Mamola came back in 1992 on a Yamaha as a privateer. His last "feat in battle" was a 3rd position at the Hungarian GP. Retired from racing, he remained involved in the world of Grand Prix : test rider for Kenny Roberts' team, BMW cups' representative, twoseater Ducati rider and speaker on TV. Randy Mamola also (gives much time to) his charity "Riders for Health".
