80 cc German motocross champion in 1992 and 1993, Alex Hofmann chose track races in 1995. Rising rookie for Germany after his 250 cc national and European 250 cc titles in 1998, he took part in the 250 cc world championship from 1999 to 2001 as a privateer rider. In 2002, Alex Hofmann replaced Garry Mc Coy for three 500 cc Grand Prix on Yamaha and Loris Capirossi for one race on Honda. Kawasaki recruited him as test rider for his return in MotoGP. Alex Hofmann was sometimes faster than the permanent riders and earned his place for the following season. Because of mechanical problems and injuries, but also handicapped by his big size, he reached episodically the top 10. Replaced by Randy de Puniet in 2006, Alex Hofmann joined Luis d’Antin Ducati team. He had his best result at the wet 2007 French Grand Prix (5th).
