Mick Doohan started racing aboard production bikes in Australian and Japanese championships. In 1989, he made his Grand Prix debut with the Honda factory team. He learnt much during his first season beside Eddie Lawson and Wayne Gardner. He earnt his first podium in Germany. During the following season, as Eddie Lawson was back with Yamaha and Wayne Gardner injoured in the early season, he became the team leader. He improved much with 3 pole positions and 5 podiuums, among which a victory in Hungary. In 1991, Mick Doohan started to build a solid reputation of performance and regularity : 14 podiums (3 wins) out of 15 races. 1992 should have been a triumphing season thanks to a new engine, called "Big Bang". Unbeatable in the five first rounds, He just missed victory at Mugello. In Assen, a crash during a practise session almost put an end to his career. With a lot of courage, he took part in the last round of the season but couldn't stop Wayne Rainey from being crowned. In 1993, he lived his victory at Mugello like a resurrection. Mick Doohan started the '1994 season with an unbroken motivation. Without any real opposition (14 podiums out of 14 races), he clinched the title three races before the end of the season. During the reigning years of Mick Doohan, no rider was able to contest two championships in a row : Luca Cadalora in 1994, Daryl Beattie in 1995, Alex Criville in 1996 or Tadayuki Okada in 1997. During this season, Mick Doohan broke several records : most wins in season (12), most pole positions in season (12), most successive pole positions (12), most points in a season (340). En 1998, the new-comer Max Biaggi toughly battled out with him in the first part of the season (win at Suzuka...) before losing ground. In 1999, Mick Doohan was forced to retire after a serious crash in Jerez.
