Son of a former racer, Derek, Cal Crutchlow devoted his early years to football (he had trials with Coventry City and Aston Villa). He made his road racing debut at this age of 14 in promotion cups : UK Junior Challenge (1999), Aprilia RS125 Challenge (2001), Yamaha R6 Cup (2003). This latter experience allowed him to gain a ride in the British Supersport championship, which he clinched the title in 2006. Recruited by Suzuki, Cal Crutchlow took part in British Superbikes. He finished the season in 9th position, claiming a podium in the final round. In 2008, he joined Honda and earned his first wins. He took the 3rd place to the expense of Tom Sykes, whose Suzuki had a mechanical failure in the last race. Wild card on the World Superbike rounds, he scored a second position at Donington. In 2009, Cal Crutchlow clinched the title for his first full World Supersport campaign with the official Yamaha team. He made the move to the Superbike class in 2010. He showed himself at ease in the superpole exercise (6 poles) and secured 3 wins, making a perfect race week end at Silverstone. 5th in the final standings, Cal Crutchlow replaces Ben Spies in the MotoGP Tech3 team.
