Firstly working as paint strayer, Troy Bayliss began his racing career pretty late (28 years). He took part in the Australian Supersport (2nd in 1995) and Superbike (3rd in 1996, 2nd in 1997) championships. Thanks to his good performances, Suzuki invited him to ride at the 250 cc Australian GP, which he finished in 6th position. In 1998, he tried his luck in Great-Britain. 6th for his first season, he was crowned in 1999 aboard his GSE Ducati. In 2000, while Troy Bayliss was contesting the American Superbike championship, he was called by the Ducati factory team to replace Carl Fogarty, injured. He won two races and earnt thirteen top-4 finishes. 4th in the overall ranking, he was confirmed in the team for 2001 and won the title. In 2002, after a complete domination in the first part of the season, he lost his title in favour of Colin Edwards in the last round at Imola. 2003 marked the beginning of a new adventure with the MotoGP Desmosedici, beside Loris Capirossi. With three 3rd places and a 6th final position, Troy Bayliss showed a good potential. Unfortunately, he had less success during the '2004 and '2005 seasons. Troy Bayliss came back to the World Superbike championship with Ducati in 2006. He clinched the title and won the last MotoGP round in Valencia as he was replacing Sete Gibernau. Less competitive and consistant in 2007, Troy Bayliss although won seven races but finished 4th. He will be in contention for a third world title in 2008 with the new Ducati 1098.
